Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Arsenal predictions

A fortnight is a long time in football.

Two weeks ago, Arsenal were riding the crest of a wave. A comfortable, confident 3-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion on April 6 meant they had collected 31 points from the 33 available since the turn of the year.

That win on the south coast moved Arsenal to the top of the Premier League table. Next up was a tussle with Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, a tie in which the Gunners were the favourites.

That was when the downturn started. Bayern were the happier of the two teams after a 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium in the first leg.

A few days later, Arsenal went down 2-0 to Aston Villa at their home ground to hand the initiative to Manchester City in the title race.

Then, on Wednesday night, a 1-0 loss to Bayern dumped Arsenal out of the Champions League. The Premier League title is now the only trophy they can win this season.

The bookmakers do not expect them to claim that prize either. With their two-point lead in top spot and favourable run of fixtures before the end of the campaign, Manchester City are in pole position to scoop a fourth consecutive championship crown.

Yet Arsenal must not be defeatist. With City in FA Cup action this weekend, Arsenal will move back into first place with a win at Molineux.

A club that has not won the title since 2004 is still in a strong position with six rounds of fixtures remaining. It is hardly beyond the realms of possibility that City will slip up in the coming weeks, so Mikel Arteta must attempt to keep spirits high within the dressing room.

That is easier said than done after a tough couple of weeks, but there is a reason why Arsenal are second in the Premier League. On Saturday they must show it.

Wolves vs Arsenal betting tips

Wolves can be a tough team to play against but we expect Arsenal to come out on top one way or another.

Arsenal -1 handicap – Evens (Betfred)

This wager is the equivalent of tipping Arsenal to win the game by a one-goal margin, which is something we see as a distinct possibility.

Wolverhampton Wanderers should not be underestimated. They have had a full week to prepare for this match, whereas Arsenal only arrived back in London on Thursday after their trip to Munich.

Wolves have caused problems for other big-six sides this season. They beat Manchester City at Molineux and have done the double over both Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. Gary O’Neil’s side only lost narrowly at the Emirates, even though they were outplayed for long periods.

Wolves are dangerous on the counter-attack, even more so now they have got the likes of Matheus Cunha and Hwang Hee-chan fit again.

Arsenal have the best defensive record in the division, though, and they are well equipped to grind out a win on Saturday.

We may not see the Gunners at their free-flowing best, but it is important that they turn in a disciplined, resilient display against Wolves.

Arsenal to win second half – 3/5 (Betfred)

After their mental and physical exertions in midweek, Arsenal will not necessarily come flying out of the blocks here.

This current side looks more mentally strong than the more inexperienced group that chased the title last season, but it is only natural that recent results against Bayern Munich and Aston Villa will have dented their confidence.

It may take Arsenal until the second half to make a breakthrough. By that point of the game, we expect the visitors to be in control.

Their record in that regard is good: Arsenal have only lost two second halves on the road this term, the lowest figure in the division.

If the score is still level heading into the second period, Wolves may have to withstand an onslaught from Arteta’s team, who have taken more points on the road than anyone else in the Premier League.

Tip Arsenal to win the second half at 3/5 with Betfred

Kai Havertz to score anytime – 8/5 (Betfred)

Arteta’s deployment of Kai Havertz as a No.8 against Aston Villa was widely criticised, even though the Germany international caused problems in the first half last weekend.

Havertz was restored to a centre-forward role against Bayern Munich and he looks set to continue there on Saturday.

For all that he can look ungainly at times, Havertz has a decent record for a player who has never been renowned as an out-and-out goalscorer.

Only Bukayo Saka can better his return of nine goals in the Premier League, five of which have come in his last eight top-flight appearances.

In recent weeks, Havertz has shown why Arsenal bought him from Chelsea last summer. A goal in this crunch clash with Wolves would add further supporting evidence.

Back Kai Havertz to score any time at 8/5 with Betfred
