U21s: Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur

Friday 28 April 2023 21:30

Manchester United’s Under-21s drew 2-2 with Tottenham Hotspur in Premier League 2 on Friday evening, with both Noam Emeran and Joe Hugill on target for the Reds.

United took the lead after just 13 minutes played, with Charlie Wellens’ laser-accurate pass picking out Emeran, who muscled off his defender to fire past Josh Keeley.

Spurs responded instantly after seizing on a mistake at the back, as Romaine Mundle curled a right-footed effort beyond the stretching Radek Vitek.

Nile John’s low effort handed Tottenham the advantage in the game shortly after the second-half restart, before Joe Hugill’s coolly-placed finish levelled the game just five minutes after.

A familiar celebration for everyone involved with United, as displayed by both Teden Mengi and Noam Emeran.

With the game in its relative infancy, Max Oyedele tested his luck from range but saw his effort fly over the crossbar from 25 yards out.

Just 13 minutes in, however, the Reds took the lead, with Emeran opening the scoring. A long ball from Wellens was latched onto by the young Reds forward, who smashed home past Keeley.

Mundle then seized upon a loose pass in the United backline to level the game for Spurs just two minutes later, as the Lilywhites instantly restored parity.

Mundle tried his luck again moments later, with Vitek collecting well to prevent the winger from adding to his goal tally.

Omari Forson curled a left-footed effort from the edge of the area as the first period etched on, but was denied by the Tottenham keeper.

As the second half began Matthew Craig dispossessed Sam Murray and picked out John in midfield, as the Spurs man fired a low effort past an unsighted Vitek to make it 2-1 to the visitors.

United hit back just five minutes later to level the game again, with Dan Gore weaving his way past three Tottenham players, before neatly playing in Hugill to dispatch his tenth Premier League 2 goal of the season.

Murray’s cross from deep was well delivered with just over an hour gone, as Gore connected tamely from the edge of the area, resulting in a routine gather for Keeley in the Spurs goal.

Brooklyn Lyons-Foster had the ball in the net as the visitors looked to retake the lead but the flag was soon raised for offside, as both teams continued their respective pushes for a go-ahead goal.

Mateo Mejia charged forward inside stoppage time as our young Reds continued our pursuit, with the Spurs backline standing tall to block his forward efforts.

Mateo Mejia was a constant livewire down the right flank for our young Reds during the second period.
