Spurs to join race for former Celtic star

Tottenham Hotspur continued their fine start to the new Premier League season with a 1-0 win over Luton Town on Saturday.

Spurs had midfielder Yves Bissouma sent off in first-half added time and looked to be struggling against the Hatters at times, but Micky van de Ven’s first goal for the club earned Ange Postecoglou’s side a vital win.

The Lilywhites now sit top of the league table ahead of both Arsenal and Manchester City, who face each other on Sunday afternoon.

In the meantime, it appears that Tottenham are ready to join the race to sign a former Celtic forward.

According to Football Insider, the North London outfit are one of a number of clubs interested in Portuguese attacker Jota.

The 24-year-old currently plays for Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad, and he has scored once in five games for the Pro League side.

His future has been thrown into doubt, though, after he was omitted from Al-Ittihad’s squad list to play in the Saudi top flight.

Jota is said to be a target for Tottenham Hotspur

Postecoglou is currently having to cope with injuries to both Ivan Perisic and Manor Solomon, and the report claims that he will therefore look to bolster his squad during the upcoming transfer window.

Jota joined Al-Ittihad from Celtic over the summer, having impressed during his time in Glasgow.

In total he made 83 appearances across all competitions for the Bhoys, scoring 28 goals and providing 26 assists.

The former Portugal under-21 international signed a three-year-deal with the Pro League side when moving to the Middle East over the summer, but it appears increasingly likely that he will leave the club before that date.

Although he cannot play in the Pro League, Jota’s first opportunity to leave Al-Ittihad will be when the transfer window reopens in the new year, and several clubs are likely to be interested in signing him.
