Premier League title race: When can Manchester City win title?
Manchester City are one win away from a third successive Premier League title.
So when can Manchester City win the league?
Well, they might do it without kicking another ball.
Arsenal play Nottingham Forest on Saturday (17:30 BST) and a Gunners defeat would see City crowned champions for the fifth time in six seasons.
Regardless of that result City will win the league – their seventh Premier League success – with victory over Chelsea on Sunday (16:00 BST).
Speaking after their win, and before Arsenal’s defeat, Guardiola told Sky Sports: “We’ve done our duty by beating them at the Etihad. Both teams have had an exceptional season. It was good to win between the Real Madrid games.”
Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard said he felt “there is no hope now” and Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta added: “Mathematically, it’s still possible, but today it’s impossible to think about it”.
Simon Gleave, head of sports analysis at Nielsen’s Gracenote, said: “Arsenal’s 3-0 defeat by Brighton has more or less ended the Premier League title race. The chance of City not getting the two points they now require to win the competition is estimated to be 0.6% by the latest simulations using our Euro Club Index.
“With the Premier League title almost assured, Manchester City’s chance of winning the Treble has increased to 39% according to our latest simulations.”
Guardiola’s side also have a superior goal difference – 61 to Arsenal’s 41 – and have won 16 of their past 18 games in all competitions, scoring 56 goals and conceding only nine.
Only one team has ever had 69 points with 10 games remaining – as Arsenal did – and failed to win the title. That was Liverpool in 2018-19, when they finished on 97 points, one behind City.
City are chasing a historic Treble, with an FA Cup final against rivals Manchester United to come and a Champions League semi-final with Real Madrid to navigate.
Only one team has accomplished the Treble before in English football, Manchester United in 1998-99.
