Noel Gallagher blames ‘disastrous’ Howard Webb for VAR blunders, but is happy latest was against Liverpool

Noel Gallagher has pinpointed the key issue with video assisted refereeing in the Premier League, but explained why he isn’t too bothered.

The Oasis legend and Manchester City superfan joined talkSPORT to discuss his side’s rapid start to the season.

Sadly, though, this week has been dominated by one story, and that’s VAR.

During Tottenham’s 2-1 win over Liverpool last weekend, Luis Diaz was incorrectly ruled offside for the game’s opener, with the video team fumbling the call.

The refereeing association –the PGMOL – have since apologies to the Reds, and released audio to show how the blunder took place.

Footage of the incident was shown as part of an effort to bring in more transparency, something which PGMOL chief Howard Webb pledged upon his return to the organisation in August 2022.

However, Gallagher is far from satisfied with the job Webb has done so far.

When asked about the Diaz blunder, Gallagher singled-out the former Premier League referee, saying: “All I will say is, this guy Howard Webb, since he’s been brought in to sort stuff out it’s been nothing short of an absolute disaster.

“Nobody wants it VAR, it kills the vibe in the ground, they cannot get it right.

“For the life of me, I cannot understand why they don’t use the same system they use in the Champions League, I can’t understand why [Premier League clubs voted against it].

“It seems to be really definitive and fan friendly, I imagine the system here will get thrown out. What about the 60,000 in the ground? If football isn’t about the fans it’s not about anything.”

Gallagher did identify one positive, though, that the incorrect call ended rival Liverpool’s 19-game unbeaten run.

“The only good thing about it is that it was against Liverpool,” he said.
