Manchester United abandon January moves for two targets

Manchester United once again secured a win despite an unconvincing performance as they beat Sheffield United 2-1 on Saturday.

Erik ten Hag’s side have endured a difficult start to the season, losing four times already in the Premier League, but they have also come close to slipping up in other games.

Before the international break, the Red Devils scored twice in added time to overturn Brentford’s 1-0 lead and secure a crucial three points, and they were dominated by the Blades at Bramall Lane last time out.

The Dutchman will therefore be hoping to see his side show improvement, however they face a stern test in their next Premier League fixture with the Manchester derby against Manchester City coming up on Sunday.

In the meantime, it appears that those in charge of United have made a huge decision ahead of the upcoming January transfer window.

As per Football Insider, the club have abandoned planned moves for defensive targets Goncalo Inacio and Jean-Clair Todibo.

Manchester United have put a planned move for Todibo on hold

The pair were among United’s top targets as they search for reinforcements in the centre of defence, but the report claims that the club have limited funds to use during the mid-season transfer window and have therefore put the proposed moves on hold.

Sporting CP star Inacio has been in fine form over the past few seasons for the Portuguese club, making more than 133 appearances in total since his debut.

Todibo, meanwhile, has also been impressing for current club Nice, having joined the French side from Barcelona in 2021.

The 23-year-old initially moved to Ligue 1 on loan, before making the switch permanent a few months later.

United had hoped to sign a central defender during the recent summer transfer window but ultimately failed to land any of their targets.

Both Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez have struggled with injuries so far this season, while Harry Maguire appears to still lack the complete trust of Ten Hag.
