Man United vs Liverpool live score, result, updates, stats as Mainoo fires Red Devils into lead

OLD TRAFFORD, MANCHESTER — Manchester United held Liverpool to a 2-2 draw and dented Jurgen Klopp’s chances of securing a second Premier League title.

Liverpool had led through an acrobatic finish from Luis Diaz, but United clawed their way back into the game and took a 2-1 lead.

They had both their skipper, Bruno Fernandes, and 18-year-old sensation Kobbie Mainoo to thank. Jarell Quansah lazily tried to play a square pass to Virgil Van Dijk, but it never reached his captain. Fernandes intercepted and sweetly struck a first-time strike over Caoimhin Kelleher to draw his side level.

Mainoo then channelled his inner Federico Macheda as he took a touch past Curtis Jones and picked out the far right corner superbly. Doing so saw him bag only his second league goal and become the youngest United player to score a Premier League goal against Liverpool.

United then conceded their third penalty in two games as it was another sloppy challenge by a tired-looking defender. This time it was Aaron Wan-Bissaka who brought down Harvey Elliott in the box.

Man United2Fernandes 50′, Mainoo 67′
Liverpool2Diaz 23′, Salah 84′

Mohamed Salah converted from the spot with conviction and has now scored more Premier League goals against Man United at Old Trafford than any other player in the competition’s history. He also became the first visiting player to score in four consecutive league games at the Theatre of Dreams.

United would undoubtedly prefer to be contenders in title races themselves rather than thwarting others’ chances, however, for now, the satisfaction for Erik ten Hag’s side is clear in the knowledge that they have disrupted Liverpool’s FA Cup hunt and potentially halted their pursuit of a second league title.

Man United vs Liverpool live updates, highlights, and commentary

FT: That’s it! United hold Liverpool to a 2-2 draw.

90+8 minute: Casemiro comes flying through Diaz and gets a yellow card. Liverpool will have one last chance to put this ball into the box.

90+7 minute: Antony is played through on goal but strikes right at Kelleher.

90+6 minute: Liverpool are pumping balls long but when United win it they keep giving it back to the Reds. We’re seconds away from the full-time whistle.

90+4 minute: Antony is now given a yellow card for dissent. Diaz has just fired over the bar from the six-yard box!

90+3 minute: Mount is booked for a cynical challenge on Gakpo who was breaking away at pace.

90th minute: SEVEN minutes of added time. Will we see a winner?

84th minute: Salah converts! We’re all level with around ten minutes to play including stoppage time.

82nd minute: PENALTY to Liverpool! Wan-Bissaka brings down Elliott in the box with a clumsy challenge.

79th minute: How has Salah missed?! Diaz’s shot is parried kindly by Onana into his path but he can’t keep his effort below the bar. 99 times out of 100, he buries that.

78th minute: The Stretford End are enjoying Klopp’s craziness on the touchline. “He’s cracking up, he’s cracking up, Jurgen’s cracking up” is the chant.

75th minute: Kambwala is shown a yellow card as he goes flying into a challenge. Klopp is furious on the sideline, perhaps he felt it should have been a red?

67th minute: WHAT A STRIKE! Kobbie Mainoo fires United ahead with a peach of a strike.

66th minute: Bradley makes way for Gomez and Jones comes on for Szoboszlai. Antony does indeed replace Rashford.

65th minute: Finally a break in play. Rashford is down injured and it looks as though Antony will replace him.

60th minute: This is real end-to-end stuff now and I can’t quite tell which side is benefitting more.

55th minute: Liverpool now on the counter and Diaz finds Nunez whose inside pass/shot is nearly turned into the back of the net by Dalot. Exhilarating stuff in this second half.

53rd minute: United are knocking at the door now. Garnacho is the latest to have a go at Kelleher but his shot is deflected over the bar.

50th minute: WOW! UNITED ARE LEVEL! With their first shot of the game, Fernandes pulls them level out of nowhere. Quansah’s incredibly lazy square pass is hit straight to the Portuguese midfielder who chips Kelleher from 40 yards out!

46th minute: The second half is underway.

HT: United have been bruised and bullied in this first half yet it somehow remains just 1-0. Will they make Liverpool rue those missed chances?

42nd minute: Bradley is allowed to drift into United’s box and cuts the ball across for Nunez to dummy and tee up a Diaz shot which is blocked.

40th minute: Diaz goes down and Casemiro kicks the ball out so he can receive treatment. He gets straight back up to his feet, much to the dislike of the Old Trafford faithful.

36th minute: Klopp’s men have just had their 13th shot of the match. This one again from Salah but it’s a wild one from him.

35th minute: Liverpool are all over United here. Nunez tries to better Salah’s strike but he can’t quite keep the strike down.

33rd minute: Salah is picked out by Diaz and the Egyptian curls an effort goalwards but Onana makes the save.

28th minute: Nunez comes flying through Garnacho and somehow earns himself a freekick.

26th minute: United counter and Mac Allister brings down Fernandes. The Liverpool midfielder is lucky to avoid a yellow there.

23rd minute: GOAL! 1-0 to Liverpool! It had been coming and the visitors lead. Robertson’s corner is swung in and Nunez flicks on the header to the far post for Diaz to acrobatically volley past Onana.

21st minute: Again it’s Robertson down the left causing United problems. This time they back away from the Scot who is allowed the freedom to shoot but drags his effort wide.

18th minute: Robertson’s tantalising cross is met by Szoboszlai but he’s sliding in to make contact and it goes narrowly wide. Liverpool kicking into gear now.

13th minute: Liverpool slightly getting on top here as they’re finding space in behind United’s defence. Nunez is well tackled by Dalot who was the host’s last hope on that attack.

6th minute: Bradley goes into the book for a late sliding challenge on Rashford. Well played by the referee Anthony Taylor who let play on but remembered to go back to the foul.

3rd minute: Szoboszlai forces Onana into an early save. What a start to this game.

2nd minute: Garnacho has the ball in the back of the net but he’s well offside.

1st minute: We’re underway at Old Trafford.
