Man United boss Amorim keen to sign Sporting star

The Manchester United squad have landed in the United States ahead of their pre-season tour of the country.

The Red Devils have landed in Chicago and will face Premier League rivals West Ham United, Bournemouth and Everton over the next fortnight.

Ruben Amorim’s side were held to a goalless draw by old rivals Leeds United in their first friendly of the summer in Stockholm earlier this month, and the Portuguese will hope to see improvement when United meet the Hammers.

In the meantime, it appears that the United boss is keen to re-sign one of his former players.

According to Portuguese outlet A Bola via GiveMeSport, Amorim is keen to add Sporting CP midfielder Morten Hjulmand to his squad this summer.

The 26-year-old midfielder joined Sporting from Italian side Lecce in 2023 and worked under Amorim until the manager departed to take charge of United towards the end of 2024.

He has played 96 times for the Lisbon giants across all competitions and has been largely impressive, and the report claims that Amorim is now keen to lure the Dane to Old Trafford.

United are not the only side showing interest in the Danish midfielder, though, with Sporting having already rejected an offer in the region of £35 million from Juventus for the player.

It is claimed that the Portuguese champions are only willing to let the midfielder leave the club if his release clause – currently set at around £69 million – is triggered.

Amorim is said to ‘really like’ Hjulmand, who primarily plays as a holding midfielder but is also capable of operating slightly further forward or even on the flank.

The Denmark international is under contract until the end of the 2027/28 season, but it remains to be seen whether or not United can lure him to Old Trafford this summer.
