Liverpool vs Man United live score, updates, lineups, result from Premier League match at Anfield

ANFIELD, LIVERPOOL — Two teams in vastly different states face each other when Liverpool and Manchester United renew their bitter rivalry on Sunday.

The hosts sit top of the Premier League having suffered just the one league defeat all season – and that coming in famously controversial fashion at Tottenham.

Erik Ten Hag’s side, meanwhile, begin the day in eighth, having also seen their European hopes dashed by defeat to Bayern Munich in midweek.

Of course, the form book is said to go out of the window for such fixtures, and United will know that as well as any side having lost just one of their last 22 games prior to a 7-0 drubbing at Anfield last season.

Can they produce a similar shock in reverse this time around?

Liverpool vs Manchester United live updates, highlights, commentary

60th min: Liverpool getting increasingly frustrated and Jurgen Klopp has seen enough. Cody Gakpo and Joe Gomez are about to enter the fray, with Ryan Gravenberch sure to be one of the players coming off after taking a knock.

And Dominik Szoboszlai is the other – it hasn’t been his day today.

53rd min: United get Dalot into space on a rare foray forward but he can only send a low cross into the arms of Alisson.

47th min: Salah lays off the ball for an arriving Alexander-Arnold but, in making space for a shot, he creates too tight an angle and can only find the side-netting.

KICKOFF: MANCHESTER UNITED RESTART THE GAME

HALFTIME: LIVERPOOL 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED

45th min (+1): Amrabat and Endo challenge for a loose ball and it’s the Liverpool man who gets there second, giving away a free-kick and rightly receiving a yellow card.

However, United waste the good position with a truly terrible set-piece delivery, and that’s the half.

45th min: Two minutes of added time coming and Manchester United will be delighted with how this has gone so far given the pre-match predictions of a hammering.

42nd min: Liverpool win it in midfield and quickly get the ball forward through Gravenberch but, after he finds Salah at the edge of the area, a weak shot follows that Onana easily collects.

37th min: Liverpool win a corner and find Konate with it but he can’t keep his header down and sends it in into the Kop.

The hosts could really do with using one of those to open this game up a little.

35th min: The Manchester United fans can suddenly be heard very loudly in that particular corner of Anfield and that is because the visitors have succeeded in quieting the home supporters.

That said, Sofyan Amrabat has just given them reason to cheer by dragging back Luis Diaz for a yellow card.

28th min: Great save Onana!

Van Dijk heads a corner powerfully goalward but Manchester United’s ‘keeper is equal to it and pushes the ball acrobatically over for another corner that is comfortably defended.

27th min: Maino now goes into the book after reaching a 50/50 with Endo late and catching the Japan international.

21st min: Nunez barges powerfully into Evans as the ball heads their way and Michael Oliver rightly calls a foul.

The Uruguayan then gets himself booked for booting the ball away, prompting Klopp to tell him to calm down.

15th min: Liverpool win the ball high and funnel it out to Trent Alexander-Arnold, but his cross is overhit and heads straight out of play.

United will be fairly happy with how they’ve dealt with the hosts’ threat so far.

10th min: United trying to calm things down a little bit with Onana taking his time in possession and picking out free men. It’s risky, but it’s definitely helping to relieve pressure a little.

3rd min: Unbelievable noise in here as Liverpool win a corner and, though United clear it, it’s only nervously so following a flick-on.

This is going to be some test for Erik Ten Hag’s side.

KICKOFF: LIVERPOOL GET THE GAME STARTED!

15 mins to kickoff: The warm-ups are complete and the Manchester United players head inside to a chorus of boos from Anfield. It’s going to be some atmosphere in here with an extra 7,000 Liverpool fans in that top tier of the Anfield Road stand for the first time.

45 mins to kickoff: A huge afternoon coming up for Kobbie Mainoo in the Manchester United midfield. The 18-year-old certainly didn’t look intimidated when he helped the Red Devils to victory at Everton recently, but a game against Liverpool should represent a sizeable step up.

1 hr to kickoff: The team news is in! Check out both starting XIs above.

1.5 hrs to kickoff: A potential team news hint from the Liverpool dressing room, where Sky Sports’ pre-match coverage appeared to show Alexis Mac Allister’s shirt laid out. We couldn’t be about to see a miraculous recovery from the Argentine, could we?

2 hrs to kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of Liverpool vs Manchester United in the Premier League. The Reds thrashed Erik Ten Hag’s side 7-0 when these two great rivals last met here but they would take any win no matter how narrow today as they look to stay on top of the pile.

Liverpool starting 11 vs Man United

Liverpool (4-3-3, right to left): Alisson (GK) — Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Tsimikas — Szoboszlai, Endo, Gravenberch — Salah, Nunez, L. Diaz.

Subs: Adrian, Kelleher, Gomez, Jones, Gakpo, Elliot, McConnell, Quansah, Bradley.

  • Out: Diogo Jota (muscle), Andrew Robertson (shoulder), Joel Matip (ACL), Alexis Mac Allister (knee), Thiago (hip), Stefan Bajcetic (calf)
  • Suspended: None.

Jurgen Klopp springs no major surprises with his starting XI to face Manchester United as he continues to contend with a hefty injury list.

Big calls on Curtis Jones or Ryan Gravenberch in midfield and Cody Gakpo or Darwin Nunez up top were essentially already made by the selection for a Europa League defeat in Belgium on Thursday.

Man United starting 11 vs Liverpool

Manchester United (4-3-3, right to left): Onana (GK) — Dalot, Varane, Evans, Shaw — McTominay, Amrabat, Mainoo — Antony, Hojlund, Garnacho.

Subs: Bayindir, Rashford, Reguilon, Pellistri, Wan-Bissaka, Van de Beek, Gore, Hannibal, Kambwala.

  • Out: Casemiro (hamstring), L. Martinez (foot), Malacia (knee), Maguire (groin), Eriksen (knee), Mount (calf), Martial (ill)
  • Suspended: Bruno Fernandes (yellow card accumulation)

Ten Hag hands a start to Kobbie Mainoo in midfield and gives Scott McTominay the captaincy as he looks to deal with the absence of skipper Bruno Fernandes due to suspension.

Marcus Rashford has failed to recover from illness in time to start at Anfield but could impact the game from the bench.
