Jeremy Doku is the real deal, Eddie Nketiah isn’t Arsenal’s answer and Vincent Kompany is in trouble – things we learned on Saturday

There is never a dull weekend in the Premier League, and Saturday’s matches were no different in what was another hectic day.

In the penultimate weekend before the next international break, seven matches were on show, which saw plenty of controversy.

It was a perfect day for Manchester City, who hit six against Bournemouth as Pep Guardiola’s men returned to the top of the table.

Meanwhile their title rivals Arsenal suffered their first defeat of the season after losing away at Newcastle after VAR allowed Anthony Gordon’s goal to stand.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta raged over the decision following the match, as he labelled it as a ‘disgrace’ in an extraordinary rant.

Elsewhere, Manchester United got back to winning ways after beating Fulham in dramatic fashion, while Burnley are bang in trouble having lost a fourth consecutive top-flight match.

And unsurprisingly there are plenty of takeaways from what was an action-packed Saturday.

Jeremy Doku is the real deal

The Belgian has starred since joining the Citizens from Rennes for £55million in the summer.

But few would have expected him to adjust to life in England so seamlessly, with his dazzling display against the Cherries his finest in a City shirt so far.

Opening the scoring at the Etihad, he then provided four assists to become the youngest player in Premier League history to register five goal involvements in a single match.

Boss Pep Guardiola waxed lyrical over the 21-year-old’s performance, as he said: “All the games he has played here he has been fantastic. He has surprised all of us.

“He is a great footballer. He reads every action exactly as he has to do.”

The Spaniard added: “I think he’s happy and hopefully he can be here for many, many years.”

Arsenal need to sign a new striker

If Arsenal are serious about winning their first league title since 2004, they have to sign a new centre-forward in January.

Gabriel Jesus, for as gifted and brilliant as he is, cannot be relied upon with the Brazilian no stranger to picking up injury knocks.

And his back-up Eddie Nketiah simply isn’t good enough to lead Arsenal’s line on a consistent basis, with the one-cap England international a passenger in big fixtures.

Despite banging in a hat-trick against Sheffield United last weekend, the 24-year-old struggled to make an impact at St James’ Park and never threatened the Magpies backline.

Physical presence is needed up top for Mikel Arteta, and despite Brentford keen to keep Ivan Toney until the summer, he’s the player Arsenal need to go all out for.

Bruno Fernandes puts in a captain’s performance

The Manchester United skipper has come under scrutiny in the past week, with club legend Roy Keane insisting he should have the armband ripped off him.

But the Portuguese playmaker silenced his critics with an injury time winner at Craven Cottage.

His never-say-die attitude was praised by boss Erik ten Hag, who insisted he cannot understand why the former Sporting Lisbon star is often targeted by fans and pundits.

Asked about the criticism Fernandes receives, the Dutchman remarked: “I don’t understand why.

“Everyone has their mistakes, no one is perfect. But always when he plays, he gives energy.

“He is an example. You see the way he is pressing and counter‑pressing, his recovery. He always wants the ball, he wants to create.”

Vincent Kompany is bang in trouble

The Burnley boss earned widespread acclaim over his style of play last season which saw the Clarets ease to the Championship title.

But his side now look toothless in attack and vulnerable whenever the opposition are on the ball.

Their latest defeat – a 2-0 home loss against Crystal Palace – means they have now lost nine out of their 11 matches this term.

And they have become the first side in English top-flight history to lose each of their opening six games on home soil at the start of a campaign.

With a trip to the Emirates next up for Burnley, another defeat will only further increase the pressure on Kompany.
