Inter Miami announce signing of Busquets, will reunite with Messi

Sergio Busquets has joined Inter Miami and will link up with former Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi in the Sunshine State.

The Major League Soccer (MLS) club appeared to announce the signing of the 34-year-old in a social media post on Friday after weeks of speculation.

He joins as a free agent after his contract at Barcelona expired.

During his team at the Catalan giants, Busquets made 722 appearances for the club, winning an array of trophies including three Champions Leagues and nine La Liga titles.

Busquets, who was made 143 appearances with Spain, has reportedly turned down an offer to join Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia.

Inter Miami are bottom of the Eastern Conference with 15 points from 17 games.

Busquets along with Messi – who has reportedly signed a two-and-a-half year contract with the club – will be expected to spearhead a resurgence up the table. They played 567 games together at Barcelona over 13 years

Miami are still without a manager after sacking Phil Neville.

The pair could make their debut on July 21 in a League Cups match against Mexican team Cruz Azul.

The game will be played at DRV PNK Stadium, which is Inter Miami’s temporary home as they wait for a permanent stadium in Miami.

Busquets and Messi could yet be joined in Miami by Jordi Alba, who is also a free agent this summer.
