Former Real Madrid great could be in line for surprise switch to Tottenham

As the curtain comes down on the 2022/23 Premier League season, Tottenham Hotspur will turn their attentions to who will be coaching their first-team from the start of the 2023/24 campaign.

It’s largely been a disappointment for the north Londoners throughout the season, and they’ll likely have to win all three of their remaining games against Aston Villa, Brentford and Leeds United if they want to stand any chance of getting into Europe next season.

With the experienced Antonio Conte leaving the club in controversial circumstances, Daniel Levy needs to get the new managerial appointment exactly right if he wants to see the club progress in the right direction.

To that end, it was thought that Julian Nagelsmann was a serious contender for the position, and Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg has tweeted that Spurs and the 35-year-old have held talks recently.

??News #Nagelsmann: Tottenham/Levy pushing more and more! Further talks took place in the last days. #COYS are a serious option for him. His opinion: Big club! Big potential!

?? But he wants to know exactly: How much power does he get in transfers?

And it’s still unclear who… pic.twitter.com/FseNPAB8xu

However, the process perhaps isn’t quite as quick as might’ve normally been expected, and that might be to do with the potential candidacies of other candidates.

If Levy can get it right, there’s every reason to believe that Spurs will become harder to beat next season and, perhaps, get themselves back to where they should be. Who knows, they might even win their first trophy in over 15 years to boot.

Journalist, Dean Jones, told Give Me Sport, that there are three other names of interest, one of whom is a former Real Madrid legend.

“It’s been quite a slow process, because they (Tottenham) see no point in rushing it now,” he said.

“I think it’s interesting that those names keep cropping up of Xabi Alonso, Ruben Amorim and Arne Slot. And they are of interest, but if I’m totally honest contacts close to Tottenham don’t play them up that highly.

“But they do say that they’re catching the interest of the board and that they’ve explored the potential of getting them.”
