Europa League honours for Victor Boniface amidst double heartbreak
Union Saint-Gilloise’s Nigerian import, Victor Boniface is facing a second heartbreak within a span of two days, as disappointment continues to shadow his recent endeavours, Soccernet.ng reports.
Just a day after narrowly missing out on clinching the Belgian league title, Boniface has been dealt yet another blow.
Union Saint-Gilloise, considered one of the favourites for the championship, suffered a devastating loss in their final home game against Club Brugge on Sunday.
Despite Boniface’s assist in the team’s sole goal during the 1-3 defeat, victory would have secured them the coveted title. This defeat was a crushing blow for the talented former Bodo/Glimt star, a standout performer throughout the season.
Alhassan Yusuf’s Antwerp won the league title after earning a remarkable 2-2 draw at Genk.
Adding salt to the wound, Monday evening brought further disappointment for Boniface.
He was pipped to the post for the prestigious individual accolade of Player of the Season in the Belgian Football Championship.
Genk’s Mike Trésor emerged as the victor, amassing 168 points in the voting system, while Boniface secured third place with 90 points. Another Union star, Teddy Teuma, with 129 points, also fell short of the title.
However, amidst the gloom, there is a silver lining for Boniface, who seems to be coping well with the disappointments.
The Super Eagles hopeful has earned a spot in the Europa League Team of the Season, a well-deserved recognition for his remarkable performance.
With six goals and an assist to his name, he stands alongside the finest players in Europe’s second-tier club competition.
While Boniface continues to weather these disappointments, other notable figures in Belgian football celebrated their achievements.
Antwerp boss Van Bommel was honoured as the best coach, and Arthur Vermeeren received the Talent of the Year trophy.
Thierno Barry, the top scorer in the Challenger Pro League, was crowned the Most Valuable Player, while Romeo Vermant’s goal stood out as the best of the season.
Shifting focus to the women’s game, Lore Jacobs of Anderlecht claimed the coveted title of Player of the Season, solidifying her place among the best in the sport.
