Cristiano Ronaldo’s days in the Champions League may be over, but his legacy in the competition lives on. The Portuguese scored crucial goals, set records, and delivered masterclasses in finishing. His performances in the competition have helped to establish him as one of the greatest players of all time, and his legacy is secure.
So as we look ahead to another Champions League final, it’s hard to imagine anyone having the same impact as Ronaldo has had. He has set the bar incredibly high, and it will take something truly special to match his achievements. But for now, let’s sit back and enjoy the memories of CR7’s greatest Champions League final moments.
2008 Champions League Final
Ronaldo’s first taste of Champions League success came in the 2007/08 season, when he was playing for Manchester United. United faced Chelsea in the final, which was played in Moscow. The game was a tense affair, with both sides finishing 1-1 after extra time.
CR7 had been outstanding throughout the tournament, and his performance in the final was no different. The forward constantly threatened Chelsea’s defense, with his pace and skill causing all sorts of problems. He scored the first goal of the game with a header, and while he missed a spot-kick in the penalty shootout, his overall display was second to none.
This was the year when Ronaldo first stamped his name into the history books. A first Ballon d’Or came his way, and performances in the Champions League would only get better.
2014 Champions League Final
Ronaldo’s next Champions League success came with Real Madrid in 2013/14, in Lisbon of all places. Determined to win the biggest club trophy of all in his native Portugal, CR7 pulled off all the stops to help his team overcome a 1-0 deficit to smash Atletico Madrid 4-1.
Sergio Ramos scored an injury-time equalizer, which sent the final into extra time. This was when the magic truly transpired. Gareth Bale and Marcelo’s goals put Real Madrid in front, before Ronaldo won a penalty. He put away the spot-kick to score his 17th goal of the tournament, setting a new record for the most goals scored in a single Champions League campaign.
2017 Champions League Final
The 2017 Champions League final was Ronaldo’s greatest performance-wise. In this game, he and Real Madrid faced Juventus in Cardiff. The game was expected to be a tight affair, but CR7 had other ideas.
The striker put Real Madrid in front after a clever one-two with Dani Carvajal. And while Juventus did equalize, the Italian club’s resistance soon crumbled. First, Casemiro scored before Ronaldo put the game beyond doubt by scoring his second goal from six yards to hand Zinedine Zidane’s side a two-goal lead. Real went on to win 4-1, and the Man of the Match award went to their star man.
A year later, Ronaldo won the fifth Champions League title of his career, and his fourth with Real Madrid, in Kyiv, Ukraine.
